It is clear that Holden is struggling, trying to find himself and to see where he stands between being an adult and being a child. At one point in the book when he is talking to Faith, he begins to act mature and tries to talk like an adult, but in another scene such as him fighting with Stradlater, he acts as if he is an immature child that can't control himself. To me, it seems that Holden is trying to become an adult because he thinks he doesn't belong or fit in with other teenagers.
